Artistic Director’s Note

In this, Les Boréades’ 19th season, we will continue playing for you some of the inexhaustible repertoire of Baroque and Classical music. We know that our concerts, always lively, will delight you and satisfy your need for beautiful music.

This year we present once again a work to which one never tires of listening: The Musical Offering, a profound and fascinating masterpiece by Bach. It was in response to an invitation from Frederic II, King of Prussia, a music lover and flutist, that Bach wrote this work. We thought it would be fitting, therefore, to recreate a concert at Frederick’s palace, Sanssouci, with a program of the quite galant music of the time.

A last-minute hitch has led us to replace Haydn’s little puppet operaPhilémon et Baucis by a concert of arias and duos by Mozart and his friends, which will be performed by the same line-up of singers and instruments as planned for the Haydn.

The last concert of the season will presents, in parallel, both recorder music of our day and some pre-Romantic German sonatas for traverso.

A masterpiece by Johann Sebastian Bach

In 1747, old Bach visited Berlin and Potsdam at the invitation of Frederick II of Prussia. At Sansouci, his summer palace, the king, who was an excellent flutist, set a challenge for the Cantor’s extraordinary talents. He gave Bach a theme, and asked him to improvise a three-voice fugue on it, and then one in six voices. Bach declined to meet the latter challenge on the spot, declaring the theme inappropriate for such treatment. But once he had returned to Leipzig, he composed for Frederick The Musical Offering, a set of pieces exploring all the contrapuntal potential of the royal theme and including, as requested, a six-voice fugue, one of the most beautiful ever written.

With its rich inspiration, melodic beauty, and dramatic expression, Mozart’s vocal art transcended its roots in the Italian bel canto style of his day; and in the great operas of his maturity, he attained rarely matched psychological truth. This concert presents a selection, spanning the composer’s entire career, of his beautiful arias for soprano and tenor, with the chamber ensemble playing deftly adapted versions of the original orchestral accompaniments.

Of the several monarchs whose courting of the Muses has been recorded in history, there is no question that the most talented and prolific was Frederick II, who acceded to the throne of Prussia in 1742 and became known as Frederick the Great. As well as leaving some hundred or so sonatas and several concertos for the transverse flute, the instrument from which he was inseparable, he dedicated a major part of his life to music. As well as Joachim Quantz, his teacher, he employed numerous other noteworthy musicians, including the Graun brothers, the Benda brothers, and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. At the beginning of his reign he had an opera house constructed in Berlin. At his Potsdam palace he received a visit from Johann Sebastian Bach who, after this meeting, composed The Musical Offering. What Frederick was particularly fond of, however, was the galant style which, with its refined and delicately expressive melodies, was a far cry from the contrapuntal complexities of the great Cantor.

In this recital, Les Boréades presents both contemporary works and rarely heard music from the Baroque era. Contrary to convention, the 21st century will precede the 18th and hence the title of the concert — al rovescio, Italian for backwards! In the first half of the concert we will hear extraordinary recent compositions for solo recorder, while the second half will be dedicated to sonatas by Platti, Dollé, and Ruffo for traverso, pardessus de viole and recorder accompanied on harpsichord by Eric Milnes.
