Artistic Director’s Note
In this, its 17th year, Les Boréades continues to explore all facets of Baroque music. We are convinced that you will find the concerts of our 2012-2013 season diverse and full of wonderful surprises, and that they will satisfy your thirst for beautiful music.
This year our guests include a celebrated performer from Great Britain: the great tenor Charles Daniels will join Les Boréades for a concert of English repertoire drawn from the works of Blow and Purcell. Local musicians and dancers, led by well-known choreographer and dancer Marie-Nathalie Lacoursière will join Les Boréades for two concerts of 17th century French and German music. A large and colorful combination of musicians from two ensembles, Les Idées heureuses and Les Boréades, will present German and English pieces from the beginning of the Baroque period in our third concert. Finally, the four members of our ensemble will present the great Bach’s six magnificent trio sonatas for organ in a chamber version.

Vocal and instrumental music of England, France, Germany, and Italy from around 1600
A coproduction with Les Idées Heureuses
A major concert of late-Renaissance music, offering a panorama of the music composed at the opening of the 17th century, and highlighting the extraordinary musical diversity, at that time of transition, in the four major European countries, England, France, Germany, and Italy. We will discover the markedly different styles that prevailed as the Renaissance changed into the Baroque: while England bathed in melancholy, France declared itself to be in the avant-garde, Germany remained steeped in counterpoint, and Italy indulged in artistic decadence… In short, this was a time of musical delights, some of which will be heard in this varied and appealing concert. Les Idées heureuses are collaborating for the first time with Les Boréades. Thanks to the enlarged instrumental and vocal forces of the combined ensembles, listeners will be able to discover a rich repertoire and enjoy rare and sparkling sonorities.

Music has always been intimately linked with spectacle, in dance or opera or, frequently, with the purely theatrical function of representing natural phenomena or human activities. In the 17th century, learning to dance, ride a horse, and fence were essential if you were to be accepted as a gentleman. During the Renaissance, dance was simply recreation and corporal exercise but, starting around 1580, it came to be seen as a metaphor both for harmony of the cosmos and for the political order. To be able to dance the courante, chaconne, or minuet well was not only to be able to relax, but also to show mastery of a sort of social diplomacy, of the ability to make a good impression and to avoid faux pas.

Bach’s trio sonatas for organ played on instruments
A coproduction with the Montreal Recorder Society
Between 1723 and 1729 Bach composed six trio sonatas for solo organ to free up the fingers and feet of his eldest son, Wilhelm Friedemann. The term ‘trio’, as used here, signifies that the organist has three melodic lines to play: one for each hand, played on separate manuals (keyboards), and a third for the feet, played on the pedals. The works that comprise this collection of chamber music, in which skill and poetry combine perfectly, can easily be played as “classical” trio sonatas on flute and violin with basso continuo. This is how Les Boréades will play them: with four musicians, two on the melody lines and two on the bass line.

A much-venerated queen, all kinds of tension and conflict, widespread misery, denunciations of the wealthy, and young people who do nothing but flirt, dance, and drink … Montreal in 2012? No! London in 1690! And all this set to music by some of the greatest English composers of all time: John Blow and Henry Purcell. All aspects of life, from the deepest melancholy to the most uninhibited displays of emotion, are represented in their beautiful airs, theater music, and drinking songs.
